The Furies, otherwise known as the Erinyes, are the spirits of Vengeance that serve the god Hades. They are known as his torturers in the Underworld and are utilized to punish the crimes of the wicked. The Three Furies are named Alecto for the Angry, Megaera for the Grudging, and Tisiphone for the Avenger.

The Furies have leathery wings, similar to the wings on a bat, large claws, glowing eyes, and large yellow fangs. Their weapon of choice are flame covered whips. The Furies are immortal and are extremely powerful.

They are able to change their appearance into human forms. Each of the Furies possess superhuman speed and strength as well as being capable of flight due to their wings. The full extent of their power is unknown but it is obviously quite great.

The three furies were created from the ichor of Ouranos as it was spilled by Kronos while murdering his father.

Later, after Kronos was overthrown in the Titanomachy, the Big Three (Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades) divided the world between them all and Hades recieved the Underworld. He hired the Furies to help him as his enforcers and they would be in charge of monitoring the Fields of Punishment. Sometimes they are dispatched into the mortal world to bring living sinners to justic as well.

Alecto herself was disguised in the real world as Percy Jackson's teacher and tries to kill Percy. Later, Percy fights Alecto and the rest of the Furies again while on his way to his quest. One last time, Percy encountered the Furies to return Hades' Helm of Darkness for the Furies to bring back to Hades.
