Melinoë is the daughter of Persephone and either (less commonly) Hades, or Zeus disguised as Hades. This makes her related to all the children of Persephone, and often all the children of Zeus. She has no noted daughters and no noted creations - though she is very close to the dead, as one of their guides. She is sometimes identified with the goddess Hecate, and the latter deity’s epithet ‘Melinoë’ is taken to describe her as the ‘Soothing One.’

We are also sometimes told that Melinoë, as a child of Zeus, has a split appearance- half dark, from her chthonic side, and half light, from her celestial side.

Brief History

Melinoë appears in no traditional myths, though it could be argued that all Hecate’s myths are also Melinoë’s. Most of what we know about this elusive goddess comes from the Orphic Hymns, a set of religious songs written about the various Underworld deities. We are told she is Krokopeplos, an attribute given only to her and Persephone, highlighting her role as Persephone’s child. Another notable Psychopomp is Hermes. Certain tablets and artefacts point to her as some sort of protective sorceress deity, making her more closely resemble the goddess Hecate [Goddess of Magic].

Melinoë appears in The Demigod Files, trying to scare Thalia, Percy and Nico off their quest using her powers over ghosts.
