Greek Beings: The Cs

003 || Week 7 Year 4

Hello and welcome back to Greek Beings! Last week we discussed Various creatures like the Basilisk, Bia, and Briareus! This week we're discussing the Cs of the Greek Mythology.

Today we'll be covering the Chimera, the Centaur, and Cerberus! Let's dive in!

It is crucial to note that this may contain spoilers for Percy Jackson and the other series. Read knowing that.

Chimera: The Chimera is a fierce, fire breathing creature, that is often described as a lion with a goat head and snake for a tail. It also sometimes has dragon wings, though those portrayals are rarer. The Chimera's mother is a being named Echidna, who is mentioned briefly in Percy Jackson while they're at the Hoover Dam. In writings, the Chimera is also sometimes given three heads, instead of just one goat head. The Chimera is also in lesser known fables, one of which, the Cumaean Sibyl sees it in an vision, and urges people to establish harmony, lest they summon the Chimera. However, the original Chimera was originally killed by Bellerophon.

Here's some more facts and notes.

  • The Chimera has several different spellings of it's name, including Chimaera, Chimæra, and Khimaira
  • Chimera is used to describe any animal hybrid, but is often shown as a specific kind

    Centaur: The Centuar is a half human, half horse creature, with the Torso of a human, and the body of a horse. They are often seen as wild, untamable creatures that live and roam in the region of Magnesia and Mount Pelion. Centaurs are also somewhat well known for having fought Centauromachy, against their cousins the Lapiths. A well known Centaur, is Chiron, a being who guided many heroes in their search for glory, and helped run Camp Half-Blood.

    Here's some more info.

  • Centuars are also somtimes called hippocentaurs
  • Centuars show up in all kinds of mythologies, not just Greek ones.

    Cerberus: Cerberus, also sometimes known as Kérberos, is the Hound of Hades, a three headed massive dog that guards the gates of the Underworld to ensure the dead cannot leave. He's the child of Echidna and Typhon, and while modern versions have him as a normal dog with three heads, older records gave him a snake for a tail, and serpents coming out from everywhere on his body. Some other records of Cerberus also give him other numbers of heads, sometimes up to one hundred heads. While Cerberus is well known, one of his only mythologies is the Twelfth labor of Heracles, where he was captured.

    Here's some fun facts!

  • Cerberus's other name (Kérberos) is also the name of a dwarf planet
  • Cerberus's specific dog breed is not ever known, but he's often shown as a larger dog, perhaps a bernese mountain dog or something similar.
